Applicable to: Scotland
It is estimated that the Scottish Government’s expenditure by all services on drug misuse is over £50 million every year (of which a large proportion is spent on enforcement) (The Scottish Office 1999). However, it should be remembered that reliable figures on expenditure are difficult to gather because of the number of agencies involved and the range of interventions (The Scottish Office 1999).
A recent review of drug treatment and rehabilitation announced that the amount of funding invested into treatment would increase by €3.6 million (£2.25 million) a year from 2004 on top of the €8.9 million (£6 million) additional investment planned for 2005/06, bringing the total to €48.4 million (£32.5 million) a year (Scottish Executive 2004).
