This Government programme aims to provide the best possible start for every child through:
- increasing the availability of childcare;
- improving the health and emotional development of young children; and
- supporting parents and support their employment objectives.
Sure Start integrates childcare, early education, family support and health services to achieve this. As such, Sure Start Local Programmes provide learning, health and family services to approximately 400,000 children who live in disadvantaged areas (30% of these are under 4 years old). In addition, all three and four year olds are now able to access a free early education place (of up to 12.5 hours a week).
By 2008, 2,500 child centres will exist across the country. This will provide access to all those identified as living in one of the most disadvantaged areas. By 2010, all children will be able to access a centres with 3,500 planned to exist. Also by 2010, there will be a childcare place for all those aged between three and 14 years old (from 8am until 6pm every weekday).
