Protecting Young People, Families and Communities. Evidence based response to the new Drugs Strategy. Centre for Evidence and Research (CER) formerly the NCCDP. 21st November 2008, Holiday Inn Liverpool.

With the introduction of the new National Drugs Strategy and Action Plan (Drugs: protecting families and communities) the Government has emphasised the importance of providing timely support for young people, families, and their communities. Increasingly, emphasis is placed on evidence based approaches, although developing and delivering interventions based on research is difficult. This is particularly challenging when faced with a range of evidence from different disciplines and with different qualities. This conference will present the latest evidence and understanding on a range of young people’s substance use issues. It will present policy discussions, examples from practice, theory driven interventions, and wider discussions of the role of substance use in young people’s lives today.

This conference will focus on Drug Strategy priorities and provide evidence based practice and policy responses to the issues;
• Delegates will learn about, and be able to discuss the latest information and evidence relating to young people’s substance misuse issues;
• The conference will facilitate the exchange of knowledge, views and experiences between diverse professions and disciplines;
• To promote collaborations between policy makers, practitioners, and academics.

The conference will be of interest to a diverse range of individuals and organisations and we wish to encourage participation from all sectors, including:

• Specialist drug workers;
• General young person workers;
• Charity and community workers;
• Police;
• Educators;
• Commissioners;
• D(A)ATs;
• Applied Researchers;
• Academics;
• Students (drug professionals; taught and research post graduates).

'Drug Treatment: the Great Debate'

3rd April: Edinburgh
10th April - Manchester - 13:30 to 16:30
16th April - London - 14:00 to 17:00

DrugScope and the Conference Consortium would like to draw your attention to a series of seminars entitled 'Drug Treatment: the Great Debate' being held in different parts of the UK.

The idea for the seminars came from the publication in the January 2008 edition of Druglink of a paper entitled 'The New Abstentionists'. It identified a trend in the UK to promote abstinence as the gold standard treatment goal and outcome, a trend which the paper argues brings with it some useful insights but which might also threaten Britain's harm reduction achievements - above all, maintenance prescribing for opiate dependence.

The paper is a personal analysis of the evidence from Mike Ashton based on over a decade collecting and analysing 'what works' research for the Drug and Alcohol Findings project. In the seminars the issues it raises will be scrutinised and debated. Each event will be opened by an introduction from the paper's author followed by contributions from panellists. Then the event will opened up to the delegates for discussion. The organisers particularly want to attract managers of drug treatment services and their staff and clients who can make a contribution to this debate based on their experience and understanding.

A pdf of the published  'The New Abstentionists' paper is at:
